Testimonials:
"Loved The Hobbit Book Club. Was fun exploring a favourite story, through the use of Myth and Astrology, with an interesting and fun group of fellow Tolkien enthusiasts. Looking forward to wading into the Lord of The Rings with this group, Spencer is a true Tolkien enthusiast, plumbing the depths of the legendarium of Middle Earth with characteristic thoroughness."
"I was happy with my experience. I love the Hobbit and it was even more fun going through it with others. I love to hear and see others experiences and also love seeing others perception of the book as well."
"The Guided Study Groups are a perfect blend of astrology, literature, philosophy and spirituality. Spencer is a kind, patient and caring teacher who radiates a love for his craft and fellow students. I always walk away with such a satisfying appreciation and renewed passion for literature, physical books, astrology and gratitude."
"Spencer creates a container to re-imagine the world in different colors and textures, both on his YouTube channel and in group study. Astrology forms the veins, carrying life blood from each chapter to the heart, personalizing an understanding of the book in a way very different from a typical book club. His knowledge and the depth of his understanding guide the group to explore what the words mean in a larger context of the world and the stars. With only a rudimentary understanding of astrology, I nevertheless thoroughly enjoyed this experience and learned a lot."
If this sounds great, but you're still wondering if it's right for you, here are some answers to frequently asked questions.
Q: I know I'll be missing a class or two. Should I still sign up?
A: Definitely! We'll have recordings of every class, and you'll have access to the Discord for questions and further discussion in-between classes.
Q: Can I do a payment plan?
A: Absolutely! Get in touch with me, and we'll figure out a plan that works for you.
Q: I'm not super familiar with Tolkien's work. Is this class going to be over my head?
A: All levels of experience and knowledge are welcome in this group journey, and everyone will be learning together. So wherever you're starting from, you're going to get some great info on both the Lore and Origins of Middle Earth, with the help of an experienced guide and enthusiastic fellow readers.
Q: Are there required texts for this class? What if I don't have the book in time for the first class, what should I do?
A: We will be utilizing any version of Tolkien's, The Lord of the Rings, you might have (which includes The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and Return of the King) as our main text for this class. We will also explore supplementary material via critical essays and material from Tolkien scholars, but these texts are not required. Our first class we will be getting to know each other a little, and laying the groundwork for our discussions. Even if you don't have your book yet, you'll be just fine!
Q: How much reading will we be responsible for each session?
A: We are going to try and take our time with this beast of a tome. Generally we will be discussing about 50pgs of material each session, which breaks down to about 25pgs a week, or 3-5pgs a day.
Q: I've already read The Lord of the Rings many times, is this class still for me?
A: Yes! Your insight would be greatly valued in class! While you may know more lore than most, hopefully we will help you see this classic work through new eyes and a fresh perspective, supplementing your knowledge by connecting the story with influential myths from antiquity and viewing fantasy themes through the lens of metaphysics like tarot and astrology.
